Mari El, the land of lakes

Mari El republic in Russia has all grounds to name itself the land of lakes as there are more than 200 lakes on its territory. They differ by its origin (karst or plunge-basin; interdune; river lakes that were formed by the remains of rivers), by size and by depth. But there is one thing that unites all the lakes: they all are amazingly beautiful and a lot of people enjoy their purity and primevalness.

The biggest lake of Mari El is called Yalchik. It’s one kilometer six hundred meters lengthwise and has a nominal division into big and small Yalchik. The lake is located on the territory of Mari Chodra national Mari park and is very popular not only among tourists from three republics: Mari El, Tatarstan and Chuvashia, but also among people from farther corners of the country. Along the shores of the lake there grow carvel pines that make the air on the lake very light and loaded with fragrance.

The purest lake of the republic is Karas lake. Once you find yourself on that lake you are astonished by the crystal clarity of the water. The size of it is not that big, only about 500 meters lengthwise. The lake is fed by the numerous underground strings situated on the side walls of the lake basin.

The deepest lake of the republic is Tabashino lake, the other name is Zryv. It is situated in the village Tabashino, Orshanskiy region. At the present moment, the deepest recorded point is 57 meters. But the research of the depth of the lake is still going on, now with the help of modern technologies.

Tabashino lake

Probably the most beautiful lake of the whole Povolzhskiy region is lake called the Eye of the Sea or Mushyl. Currently this lake is the most well-known lake of Mari El in Russia. It has taken part in numerous contests of the most beautiful lake in Povolzhskiy region. It differs from other lakes by its unusual emerald color of the water and the form of the lake that resembles a crater with one crushed wall. The lake was formed by the karst method like all the lakes mentioned above, in other words, as a result of the cave in the ground. It’s fed with the underground sources and atmospheric condensation. It’s hard to tell how long this lake will exist as in 2014 it got shallow a lot. Such a great loss of water was the first in the memory of local people. There are attempts to save the Eye of the Sea as losing such a unique lake would be a great misfortune for Mari land and the whole country of Russia.
